So, as an update to the original post, I had my first appointment today with the speech pathologist. As a part of the check-in process I had to fill out a list that described what I hoped to achieve through therapy. I checked the obvious ones like "speak fluently in groups, make phone calls with no anxiety, etc" then I was brought back to the therapists office and we began. Apparently the first appointment is an evaluation, so we started with conversation and I didn't have a single block. Afterwards I had to read a 3-4 paragraph passage purposefully designed to make a stutterer block. I ended up blocking 4 times, pretty severely each time. This entire time she was recording me and counting my blocks and syllables with "clickers" so that we could get a good baseline reading of where I am with my speech today for comparison later. After that she started talking about family history and I brought up the events in my early childhood I described in the previous post. I blocked 2-3 times on each sentence during this time. She brought up the possibility of seeing a psychiatrist/psychologist (not sure the correct term), to discuss and talk through those issues. I'm still on the fence about that, but I'm considering it. Overall, I'm still optimistic about this new step and ready to get to work on improving my speech. I'm supposed to go once per week for now, so hopefully I will see some results soon.
