I work in retail, and I get frustrated sometimes internally. I’ll greet someone at the register, and I’ll welcome them like usual, and every once in a while, I’ll have someone completely ignore me. They’re not all older people, so I don’t know what their reasoning is for doing that. On the second try, I won’t do anything further. I won’t scan anything or do anything but greet them again to see if they at least recognize my existence. If not, I don’t say a word to them, and I assume they have no hearing whatsoever and point at everything like the pin pad when I’ve scanned everything. Sometimes when my stutter is being a pain, I’ll get caught up on h’s like in “how are you doing today.” I’ve worked in retail long enough where I’ll stand there, as you said, and kind of aggressively stare and wait for a response. I’ve realized that I got all the power to continue the transaction as fast as I see fit, so how long it takes to check someone out is entirely dependent on how nice someone is. If you’re going to ignore me like I’m some peasant, well then, gee, I guess I only just learned how to use electronics 10 minutes ago…
