Sorry, but as a writer, I disagree. In fiction, the best way to convey a message is to put the reader in the point of view of someone who doesn't yet have it. And we can't really say what is 'okay' or not for Monty to feel because... well, he isn't real. He's still being created. We have very little exposition here to draw off of. Maybe, to us, Monty likes Julio despite the fact his stuttering makes Monty uncomfortable, but to *Monty*, maybe he sees that as "despite his difficulty speaking," and later learns and feels differently. That's not wrong. That is an unreliable narrator, which most child characters are.
