I agree to be patient with the child. From what I Googled, the Lidcombe program In Australia teaches parents to do just that and helps with ideas on how to gently work with the child. That’s great stuff. My parents were taught to ignore it and it just led to shame and isolation. The last part is what bothers me, ‘…they’re going to be just fine, trust me.’ I imagine this was meant in good faith but I think it’s important to engage the parents in a highly proactive way to address it and not to encourage in any way a passivity. As the many painful posts on this subreddit attest to, a lifetime of stuttering can be almost too much to bear.
