6 years old is a normal age for developmental stuttering. Psychogenic stuttering does exist, but it is quite rare. Many parents attribute their children's stuttering to some *event*, but to be blunt they aren't very knowledgeable when it comes to this stuff. I also know of stutterers who have hid their stutters from their families so well not even their spouses knew.
