You should try using the power of your voice to bypass your stutter rather than talking lightly. Keeping your speech deep down in your chest (almost shouting) is actually a really useful way of controlling your stutter. Most people never stutter when they shout, so using the same muscles as shouting to just speak normally can help in most cases.
