what's new in treatment? Hello all, Mid 30's male stutterer here. Is there any new breakthroughs going on in treatment? I have tried all the antipsychotic medications, that was the big treatment thing about 5 years ago. Took abilify, fanapt, saphris. None of them did anything for me but bad side effects and weight gain. I was really feeling the blues after that, then decided to get a sleep study done. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea. I knew it was a long stretch but though that low levels in the brain may contribute to stuttering. Nope that didn't work, but I sure feel a lot better and have more energy. Then I went to the varous vitamins, vitamin b's and magnesium. Nope that did nothing. The only real drug that helped me was lexapro, it kind of numbs me to anxiety, and makes me not worry about the stutter. I landed a job doing IT, and honestly it saved my life. Every day I get to answer the phone and make phone calls, and talk with tons of people. Day one of that job I went into the restroom bathroom stall and cried I was so anxious to leave my outgoing mailbox greeting. 5 years later I look back on that and consider it a good thing that I took the risk of moving across the country for the job. Anyways, I have been involved with the NSA a little bit. But honestly I don't like the people going for "equal rights, and disability status". I just want to improve my speech and live a semi normal life. I shyed away from them, and then found myself in speech therapy for the first time in 15 years. Found a SLP in my area who is excellent, caring and been focused on stuttering for 25+ years. We got back to basics of easy onset and light contact, and I felt pretty darn good about my speech after about 4 months of weekly sessions. So, life got busy and I had to take a few months off of treatment. Sure enough I did not practice what I had learned, and find myself at work with terrible speech and at home, and feeling bad about it. Need to get back in and practice what I have learned, feel like I have fallen off the track.
