Heya! Recent college graduate here who found his way in the consulting field with a stutter. Every introduction I have ends up being occupied by my stutter. In University? Yep. Trying to meet people in my new city? Uh-huh. Every day speaking with clients? Absolutely. Unfortunately the stutter rarely goes away for good, but we have absolute control over the way it affects us. College is a stressful time, especially in a field like nursing, so stuttering is bound to show up. Keep your head held high and let your abilities in class and with patients speak for you. A little lesson I’ve picked up is that nobody knows what they’re doing and they’re constantly thinking about their own lives and seldom give care to something as small as a someone stuttering. Personally, breathing techniques have never helped. My stutter comes out when I know what the topic like the back of my hand. No amount of breathing exercises or vocal tricks have ever made it better. At this stage, I’ve come to terms with it and if the need arises I mentioned I have a stutter and truck on through it. You can too. Remember that you’ve gone out and started university with the stutter by your side. If that didn’t slow you down, no reason it should stop you from reaching your next goals!
