Secondaries are physical habits we adopt when we have trouble getting a sound out, and are common with stuttering. They don't actually assist with releasing the tension, and they call more attention to the stutter. An SLP will help you identify your physical behaviors, practice eliminating distracting behaviors, work on reducing overall tension in your speech, and give you strategies for moving forward when you get "stuck". A good SLP who is experienced with stuttering can help a lot! If you're in the US, you can search for practitioners with "CCC-SLP, BRS-FD" after their name-- the last part stands for "Board Recognized Specialist - Fluency Disorders."
