I find anything that causes a sudden dopamine surge in my brain, makes my stutter worse. Coffee, sugary drinks/foods, smoking and alcohol. However, after a few drinks of alcohol (spirits), GABA takes over and inhibits the release of more dopamine, and my speech gets more fluent. To me, this proves that, neurologically, stuttering is a dysregulation in neurotransmitters in the speech centres of the brain… mainly dopamine. Each one of us is different, in that certain substances help and others don’t, but at the end of the day we’re neurologically different to people who do not stutter. Our brains have difficulty modulating the neurotransmitters required for perfect motor speech timing.
