Interesting perspective. I’ve never really thought of it in those terms. But now that you mention it, that makes a lot of sense. I wonder if doing something as discrete and simple as trying to balance on one foot could be used as a method to get through a difficult sentence, like at a store. If your mind goes towards keeping your balance, maybe that would be enough of a distraction to prevent the stutter. I don’t stutter much these days in English so it’s hard for me to test this properly, but when I get back to Japan, I will try this at the stores. I sometimes still have difficulty saying “thank you” in Japanese at the cashier. I suppose suddenly striking a yoga pose would be a bit much. ;-)
