One thing just to mention now, try not to feel so bad for him. You feeling bad for him is only going to reinforce that it's as bad as he thinks. So just act more or less normal. Obviously if he's having an extra difficult time you can act accordingly, but I would say try not to feel so bad for him on the whole. There is no question it sucks and you can be sympathetic, which is good, just don't look at him like he's a puppy with an injured paw.
