Stuttering at first, then gets better? I've been dealing with speech impediments for most of my life. Now a senior in college and pursuing a career in graphic design, I've had to give many presentations and work on my public speaking skills. Last year I took a public speaking class and my professor told me that she can't help me/give advice for my mild stutter because she has no experience in speech therapy - she saw potential and advised that I try to slow down and breathe. I recently had to give a major presentation in my senior project class and had trouble at first, where my stutter would come through, but after a few (2-3) minutes, I was able to speak clearly and was understandable for the rest of my presentation (without any real/noticeable stutter). I know I was stressed for the past few days and was under pressure from my professor who wanted our presentations to be absolutely perfect (Sleep and other people aren't important). We are asked to keep it under 8 minutes, which I (and and most of my classmates) can't make because there is so much to include in the presentation and we're afraid of missing something important. We also have to give a 30-second pitch which I try to get out, but my stutter comes through because I want to get it in under 30 seconds. I feel overwhelmed at times and am thinking of many things that I have to say. My question is why/how was I able to overcome my stutter mid-presentation and how can I get over this hurdle for my next major presentation in April, where I have to present in an auditorium? Would you have anything to suggest? I've been reading that meditation may be something I should try because it will calm my mind. Thanks!
