Why do we think it's a big deal? Because you're afraid people will notice your stutter, right? You're afraid that people will take it as a sign that you're nervous, lying, retarded, or whatever. When talking to people who know you stutter, they know it's a stutter and that it's just how you speak, therefore you won't mind if you stutter or not because it makes no difference for them. Guess what? Most people are actually like that. They mind your stutter just as much as they mind someone with an accent, and once they're over the initial awkwardness, they'll pay more attention to what you say rather than how you say it. Yes, there are exceptions, and people can always be assholes, so what? Are you going to be too scared to do anything for the rest of your life just because a few of these assholes exist? Get out there, expose yourself to the world, get humiliated, feel shitty, get back up again stronger, ask for help, keep repeating until you find some success, and eventually you'll realize that you're a lot more confident in your voice than you ever were. The stutter may or may not go away (mine is probably here to stay) but you won't care either way.
