I hated the register as well. Consider discussing it with your teacher(s), perhaps you could say another, easier, phrase? Or just wave, or your teacher just visually confirm and not call you out, or anything else you can think of. That's the sort of thing I arranged with my teachers when I was in school, often they can see you struggling and are more than happy to help.
