Why not fake until you make it, then? Impersonate fictional characters while engaged in discourse with strangers. I mean, you're never going to see them again, so why not have some fun, respectfully, of course? Talk in a British accent (or any accent you would like to explore - Irish, German, etc.) to gain that confidence, and more importantly, to have fun!
