Yes it's commoner in men than in women. Consciousness arises from the physical and chemical architecture of the brain, so the distinction between "physical" and "psychological" causes is not necessarily meaningful. Yes, there is occasionally an identifiable physical cause, such as brain injury or a brain tumour, but in the majority of cases the cause is unknown.
