I'm completely open about it. I don't make it a point to go up to random strangers or anything, but if I'm speaking with someone I don't know and feel like I'm about to have problems with a word, I just say, "I stutter, so bear with me a second!" It doesn't necessarily help my stuttering, personally. It makes me feel more comfortable about stuttering because the person I'm talking to knows what's going on and what to do, but it doesn't make me more fluent. I think it just helps me to stutter better. Now I can just focus on what I'm saying instead of that gut-dread anticipation of The First Stutter and how they're going to react.
