You might find [this article](http://www.asha.org/Publications/leader/2012/120918/In-Search-of-Stutterings-Genetic-Code/) of interest regarding genetics and stuttering. I may be misremembering this, but at ASHA (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association) this past year there was a lot of research presented on the genetics of stuttering. IIRC, research with stuttering + identical twins has shown that there is a 50-50 split in terms of whether both twins or just one twin stutters (again, my memory is foggy, maybe someone can confirm/clarify this for me). Stuttering is complex and a single cause has not been identified. Genetics is known to play a role in some cases, but is not the entire answer. It is unlikely that your mother's experience contributed significantly to your stutter, but there are many other factors that may be in play.
