Sometimes it does make sense to ask for a difference in behavior, though. I've had some periods where I've informed people that they needn't try finishing my sentences, since I'll get to it eventually (and they might not guess the right word either). Also, with e.g. examinations, it makes sense to ask for more time, given that the blocks/repetitions will extend the delivery (this is a formal option in my country, but I don't know about others). There's a difference between "changing things" and "avoiding things", I think.
