Damn, I wish I had a friend like you growing up. I think you need to let your friend dictate his own pace. It's a personal struggle with so many moving parts that if too much is expected of him, it may just be too much. The questions you pose are fantastic but because we're all different, no answer will be definitive. Ask him these questions privately and directly and go from there.
