Check out the stuttering foundation . Org for their handout labeled “7 tips for talking with kids who stutter” or something similar. It gives good advice! I know you just want to get down to the bottom of it but if they’re doing for attention, whatever and it will stop eventually. If they’re not, accusing them that they are could make it worse. The fact that you’re posting here means you care and are a good parent!
