There are studies, but so far only my own; research organizations refuse to investigate. Briefly, there have been studies on speech perception gaps, and something similar to stuttering has been observed in humans. Why do we stutter? Most likely, it's because speech perception gaps occur on short consonants, and the body adapts to this through spasms, a kind of reflex that prevents sounds from being produced from the joint during speech.
