I try not to pause for too long because it can get awkward. My pauses usually last for 1.5-2 seconds until I can get my speech flowing again. You're right, pauses make you more confident and make you seem confident to others. When you pause people go. "Oh, he's gonna say something ground-breaking!" Turn it into an advantage, people are gonna want to listen to you, whether you stutter or not.
