M23, I would identify my stuttering as severe. Stuttering is a natural variation in humans, it is not your fault. Stuttering is not your burden alone and people who you talk to have no choice but to listen. It is awkward and painful at times to communicate but others will have to accept you for who you are. For the rest of our lives, people will be prejudice against us for how we talk. I pay no mind to strangers who finish my sentences or stuff like that but when they say something egregious about how I talk or misinterpret what I say, I correct them. Stuttering is a good way to weed people out of your life who shouldn't be in it. In speech pathology research, hundreds of stutterers report having reduced quality of life and feeling of inadequacy. Stuttering affects us all and we are small stuttering fish in an ocean of people who know nothing about stuttering and who expect everyone to speak fluently. My point is, there is nothing wrong with stuttering and how we communicate and manage our stuttering is our own individual choice.
