Hello! Hi there, I just subscribed, but I wanted to say hello and explain why I'm here. I have stuttered for as long as I can remember, since I could speak I guess. My parents subscribed to the "just ignore it and it will go away" school. I picked up various strategies and methods to improve my fluency, more by luck than anything else, and today I have quite a mild stutter, but can have bouts of more intensive stuttering when I am nervous, or having a bad day! The reason I am here is that my parents approach never really went away - today I am a 31 year old man who is only really beginning to understand what stuttering is, and what it means. I am just now reading lots of interesting research and finding out that there is a community of POS, like right here, who are supporting each other, and there is so much good news in that. For a long time, I felt like had to ignore it and try to just get through it, but through what I have found out recently there is a lot more to it. There is an element of pride in it - in what we are able to do despite this difficulty we have, and that's great. I also want to let people know that there is no stigma attached to it, that it is normal, and that millions of us live normal happy lives, and that it is, in 99.999% of cases more a case that we have a bigger problem with it than anyone else. One last thing, as my wife and I are planning to start a family, I am thinking about what it will mean to have a child who stutters, what will I tell them, how can I help them, how will that feel. These are the things that I am interested in, and why I'm here! Thanks!
