Man I really appreciate this comment! posting this got me an unwelcome message about some BS "TRY THIS ONE TIP FOR JUST 2WKS TO NOT STUTTER" and apologies I didn't ask for from obsequious SLP's. My favorite (heavy sarcasm) replies are from stutterers who have had their own success or something trying to tell me I haven't tried hard enough or telling me I "had a horrible therapist" or "need to find a better therapist". Maybe those stutterers are trying to be inspiring but their success/fluency oriented privilege is showing! "I DID IT YOU CAN TOO! COME ON YOU CAN DO IT!" if I could do it I already would have done it but congrats to you for "talking right" now. I am not glad that we have this experience but am glad to see I am not alone on this!! you REALLY dodged a bullet on that speecheasy garbage, they probably assemble it for $10-30 and make hundreds off of the units and subsequent therapy (Which I imagine is very drawn out, at great cost, for people who don't want to believe that they were duped by yet another SLP. the SLP above made some comment about how they WISH SLP's were more familiar with stutterers?????? I beg pardon but is there another specialist stutterers are referred to because I was trusted to these ignorant folks for so long. Every 3-6mo in elementary school I got a new itern. it's sick, it's like they don't know enough about us so rather than stop and figure out us as people they let us (as children!) languish as pesky problems while they prided eachother in helping lisps or people in rehab for injuries/stroke.... I was a guinea pig and after 30 years getting my speecheasy and going to 2 NSA meetings it's pretty clear that SLPs would rather observe treatment-resistant stutterers and treat the stutterers like they're failing themselves vs being actively and chronically failed by the only "Experts" endowed to treat us. I really like the car analogy here!! I quit attending NSA meetings because I opened and email and had to look at Porky Pig and read that we were to "review portrayals of stutterers in entertainment" that week? what kind of clockwork orange garbage is that?? it's not our job to repeatedly analyze ourselves as though the way we speak is un-hygenic, it's not our job to educate people that we are not mentally handicapped or simply comic relief that has walked into their life, someone with a disability to give advice to.
