Hi, doctor in the NHS here 🙂 I quite enjoy speaking with stroke patients with aphasia, because they often really get what I feel (and they know I understand their frustrations too). Sure, a stroke causing aphasia and a stutter have different pathophysiologies, but at the end of the day they’re both neurological conditions, and they both can sound very similar. I also tend to disclose my stutter at the start of consultations because I want them (patient & relatives) to know it’s my normal speech and not me being nervous, so I guess that also makes it easier for them to talk about my stutter and their stroke and our shared experience. Overall my stutter’s led to some really wholesome bonding experiences with patients 😁
