Ethan, I understand what you feel especially because I’m 23 years old as well. I’m a Speech Therapist and have a stutter as well, I understand the anxiety part especially when it comes to my name. My father has a stutter as well & made me realize that anxiety is the biggest factor of it. Why is it that when I’m alone in my room I can say whatever I want to say fluently but that changes the second a person is in front of me? The anxiety of just knowing there is a person listening to you. You don’t need a Speech Therapist to help you, you help you. Fluency techniques are available online & you be your own speech therapist & implement those strategies & see what works for you. You can do this because I’m doing it & many other people also in your position. I still struggle with my stutter as I treat kids with a stutter as well & it’s okay. The hardest pill I’m still struggling to swallow is that my stutter will never go away. I strongly believe in my experience as being a person who stutters, treats people who stutter & have been around my father who’s stuttering “went away” that it’s the anxiety & our own self doubt that really gets to us in most situations. Your stutter does not define who are as a person & the knowledge & experience you have. We’ll get through this.
