I stutter in front of strangers only

I stutter in front of strangers only I have a problem. I don't usually stutter. Like i used to do, but eventually I stopped doing it in front of my old friends and family. Now, whenever I appear in an interview or go to a shop or a event, I stutter frequently. Why is that? Like, is it linked to comfortablity?
