Just commenting here to show my support. I’ve been there as well. It’s incredibly humiliating but hey, every time I quickly add after that that I stutter they all have this guilty and shameful look in their eyes and that makes it better. Honestly the guy that shouted in your face probably knew very well you had a stutter and he deserved to get punched in the face imo, dickhead. He was abusing your stutter and it makes me angry just reading it. Here’s the problem and the cruelty of stuttering in a nutshell: you stutter, you get frustrated, you try harder to “fix” it, you end up stuttering worse, repeat cycle. The only way to get out of this is for you to learn how to properly handle stutters as they come up during speech. A speech therapist can really help with that. Honestly, just give it a shot. If you don’t notice any difference after a few weeks you can always stop and search for a different way. The fact that you say that your stutter is not that bad and that you have situations where you speak fluently are very good signs that your stutter is something you can learn to work with. Stuttering is, especially for the grown adults here, something you have to learn to live with. See it as a little person that’s sitting on your shoulder and sometimes just scrambles your brains. You have to know how to deal with that guy. Unfortunately you can’t just amputate him and be done with it. You have to learn how to cope with the emotional stress that stuttering gives you. Yes, your fear might be very legitimate. But does that mean it should rule your life in such a profound way? Think about that for a while.
