Stutterers typically stutter in front of others because social presence activates threat, elevated dopamine, elevated anticipatory anxiety/adrenaline, and self-monitoring systems that disrupts our speech timing. When you’re alone none of that happens, so speech is more effortless and automatic. The general consensus is to see a speech therapist who specialises in stuttering, as well as addressing your anxieties in social situations. It’s a more holistic approach than just learning fluency shaping techniques from a speech therapist. If you’re an anxious mess in social settings, no amount of speech therapy is going to help you. Some people get CBT psycho-therapy to address these anxieties and others turn to anti-anxiety medications. Each to their own, so do what’s best for you.
