Made a 'spit it out comment', or said the words "spit it out"? In what world can that be construed as a kind, helpful, or even neutral way of speaking to someone? If her reaction was of horror and she apologized several times over, obviously she knew what she had said was not kind. I don't understand how this description of events conveys anything different.
