I don't like speech therapy because it either helps for a day or two or it's a complete waste of time because they have no idea about what goes on inside your brain. Only you do. Stuttering is a burden on those who have it but as a lot of things that I've read and watched online, you have to learn to accept it and people do want to listen to what you have to say and most of them will be as patient as possible with you because they are genuinely interested. Some people are just asses and like to mock those who can't speak properly. They just don't understand that you're still an intelligent and genuine person even though you speak differently to others. Blocking is common in all stutterers and is when you just can't get the word out until you overcome the block or change what you were saying. For example, lets say I'm trying to say the word "brick". If a stutterer has an issue saying words starting with B, they'll pull facial expressions trying to say the word but either nothing will be coming out of their mouth or the B sound will be made by the stutterer if they are trying to overcome it like "B........ Brick or B... B... B...". Some people like myself sometimes substitute a word during a block or even start the sentence again which works on and off (not always). It's different for every stutterer. I assume it has something to do with the brain sending signals via the synapses and neurones (I'm no neurologist) differently to those who have fluent speech/don't stutter. I guess having a stutter makes us unique and gives us a challenge in life that we have to overcome. People tend to listen more carefully to those who stutter and we actually have a lot to say, it's just hard for us to articulate it because of our stutter. I'd probably be a boring person if all I did was speak normally (as cynical as that may sound) but in the past, I have been a shy person because of my stutter but now that I'm growing up and maturing, I'm starting to become more confident overall, especially with my stutter and it really is helping me improve my speech. The craziest thing about having a stutter is that when you are reading to yourself in your head, you don't stutter! I've also had dreams where I didn't stutter and it was an amazing feeling even though it was my subconscious 'playing' with my mind. Hope I've helped! (Sorry if it's a bit long, I apologise in advance)
