I don't stutter, but I am married to someone who does. I also have quite a few clients who stutter and they always tell me how they don't feel judged or self conscious when they are with me. I think this is in part because when I was in elementary, I had a teacher who stuttered. She also had a tick. She was new, and we were her first class, and when the principal introduced her to us he said "This is Miss Wilson. She has a condition where sometimes she will make an odd movement, or blink really hard. It also makes it difficult for her to say words sometimes. This isn't something she can control. There's nothing wrong with her, so don't worry, Miss Wilson is okay." Or something to that effect. The way he explained it was perfect for our little brains, and definitely had a lasting effect. I'm sure it had a similar effect on all my classmates. Not that anyone has the responsibility to educate others on their disability, but to those of you one this sub who are also teachers, I want to say thank you, because I may not have seen past my husband's stutter as easily, and I would have missed out on an amazing person, were it not for a teacher.
