I've used this approach personally and there's a relief that it's out in the open. Once, it was actually a bonus - I was interviewing with a partner at the local accounting firm and the guy was really curious about the stutter and asked me a bunch of questions about difficulties growing up/obstacles overcome. He was super impressed, wanted his clients to meet me and offered me the job on the spot.
