How big does genes play for those who suffer from asthma?

How big does genes play for those who suffer from asthma? My wife and I are expecting our first child late this spring. The doctors checked on my wife and said she and the baby are fine and healthy but my wife's considered because she suffers from severe asthma - and she needs to be mindful and be safe with her meds. From what I understand asthma CAN be a genetic thing. My wife has it plus her mother and sister. My wife is also from Puerto Rico and she said many Puerto Ricans suffer from asthma due to the humidity and also the Sahara Dust. I am however not Puerto Rico (I'm Polish) and I don't have asthma - so perhaps our kid(s) won't inherent it. But than again, idk how much genes play for those who have asthma. Does anyone? And also for those who have asthma do your kids also have it? Any advice.
