Yes, imitating an accent significantly improves fluency because your mind is focused on imitating the accent than self-monitoring your fluency. It essentially uses a different hemisphere of the brain, and you tend to slow down your rate of speech too, so your words are a lot more flowy. Just practice slower rates of speech, soft onsets and linking your words. Do it on a daily basis reading aloud to retrain your brain with these techniques.
