I wouldn’t say avoidance is the goal...but instead of causing anxiety because the student has no choice but to do a speech I think it’s beneficial to give some control to the student. I started by giving speeches to only my teacher...then to my teacher and a classmate I was comfortable with. By the end of senior year I didn’t have (many) issues with public speaking. I still was uncomfortable with stuttering but I didn’t have the panic about it that I did previously. By not having a teacher that knew how I felt about stuttering or who was willing to work with me caused me to avoid speaking by skipping classes or flat out refusal.
