You have the right to have your child assessed (tested) for free by the school for any perceived problem that may impact his education. Many schools will try to convince you that testing (for anything, like speech, dyslexia, math, etc) is not necessary (because they claim the teachers will refer him if there is a problem) because it costs them extra money to do the testing, and then extra money to provide services if your son qualifies for them. Some school districts strongly discourage teachers from making referrals for testing due to the costs involved. To get your son tested, you need to make the request in writing. In the letter say what you want him assessed for and why, and then give a copy of the letter to his teacher and to his principal. By law, your state will need to assess your son and have a meeting with you to discuss the results within a legally defined time frame (a month or two). If he qualifies for speech services, then they will propose how and when the speech therapist will provide services. If he does not qualify, then they will tell you why. If you disagree with their findings, then you also have the right to have him assessed by someone independent of the school district, which the school must also pay for.
