I have a really bad stutter when I was in high school. It's the reason why I consider my high school years to be hell. Over years of trying to find the cure, I think I have finally fixed it. It shouldn't years for you to fix, at most a few months of practice to see significant improvements First I will explain why we stutter (at least based on my experience). There's two parts to speech: hardware & software. Here's how I categorize it: 1. Bad software, bad hardware: Stutter 2. Bad software, good hardware: Stutter, severe stutter 3. Good software, bad hardware: Fluent slow speaker 4. Good software, good hardware: Fluent As you can see it's all about the software. Ironically, you would get severe stutter with good hardware since you are capable of speaking fast but it's running on defective hardware. Think of a bad driver on a sports car Hardware is the muscles & physical mechanism that allow for speech. I don't think you can stutter due to bad hardware. Worse case just speaker slowly. Stutter only happens when the software misjudge the hardware. The software is just the abstract thing you brain does for speech. To speak the brain would have to send these "commands" to the muscles & stuff (the hardware). Obviously you would stutter if the brain sends the wrong commands, but unintuitively I think the difference between stuttering & fluency is just the timing. For example: `A...B..C.....D` - for some reason this is fluent on hardware X `A..B....C..D` - for some other reason this would stutter on hardware X *The key is to find what hardware you are on & adjust the "software"* Here's how to do it. To find what hardware, you need to practice talking to yourself alone until you don't stutter anymore. Once you don't stutter speaking alone that's when you know your hardware & we need to apply that to real world conversations by fixing the software part The software is trickier to fix than it seems. Speech is complex & you can't consciously fix stuttering. It's like driving. The best driver don't have to think about it. You need practice to re-wire the software Start small & talk 1 on 1 with your close friend until you are "fluent". This is not formal but find opportunities to talk to them. Experiment with how you speak here. Trying talking slower & do all the crutches you need to speak with no stuttering. Whisper if you need to. The point here is to practice the right commands for your brain to execute. The key here is to do whatever it takes to remain "fluent" by any techniques you can employ. If you stutter, just stop talking & try on different day. Try to analyze why you stutter saying the word & practice alone saying it fluently. Practicing is re-wiring the brain to execute the commands with timings you want. As you get better with staying "fluent", try removing some of the crutches/tricks that you employ As you get better with 1-1 scenario, you can try doing it with the wider audience. This is harder than it sounds since different people will have different speaking fluency & they would often times mess up your software when you trying to imitate how you speak on your hardware. Remember, to get fluency you need to fine tune your software to work with your hardware. Whenever you hear someone speaking really fast, just remember that those will only work with that particular hardware. You have your own & you will need to find what works for you. If you have bad hardware, you can still be a slow speaker fluent I hope this helps. Sorry if my writing is not good but I'm open to answer any questions you have!
