One of my high school Spanish teachers asked me either before or after class (can't remember but it was empty) if I would prefer her to call on me or wait for me to raise my hand to speak. I loved her for that and was grateful I had her for a lot of classes. In college, my Spanish prof asked me if I would prefer to take an oral exam in her office instead of the whole class and I took her up on that. A different hs Spanish teacher (I'm sensing a theme here lol) emailed my dad to let him know about my active participation in his classes as it's an important part of learning a new language. Maybe that was due more out of my shyness and always being eager, but I have saved that email even after a long decade of not being in his class. Makes me feel like I mattered and was more comfortable to speak up as he went through the effort to send an email to his student's parent about all of my good traits. I would take the student aside before or after class and ask if they would prefer to talk when prompted or to talk when they want.
