> I hate that fact that speech pathologists and researchers don't understand what stuttering is Some don't have much of a grasp on it, but it really depends on the clinician. I think that some SLPs and future SLPs (like myself!) feel a little lost when it comes to stuttering. Stuttering is still sort of a medical mystery and there is a LOT more research that needs to be done about it. Also, the scope of speech pathology is huge and we might only take one or two courses about stuttering. And I think some SLPs focus on what areas they see most of (language, articulation, etc.) and tend to put stuttering on the backburner because they usually don't have many stutterers on their caseload. Not a justification, of course, but just some of the possible reasons stuttering doesn't get as much attention as it should. I think the mental component is different for everyone, which makes it really difficult to address overarching techniques for therapy. Hopefully I will learn more in graduate school but stuttering seems intimidating to me because there is so much we don't know about it!
