Update A year ago I came on here a little lost when my 6 year old developed a stutter. Last year we started him in speech at his public elementary school. I wasn’t seeing any improvement, or really wasn’t given any tools to help him. I decided to sit in on it one day and after all 6 kids sat down and started working they did 10 minutes of work. That was 10 minutes once a week. I thought he was getting the help he needed. But I don’t think it was the right fit. He fell behind in school because he didn’t want to talk. I was so heartbroken because he was 6! At the end of the school year we decided to bring him home for 1st grade and homeschool. It was an adjustment for our family but now that we are ending the year he is loving it. We continued to use the public speech option until the fall. I was still seeing zero progress. In October I reached out to his pediatrician about going forward with a referral for a private speech pathologist. And I’m so glad we did! It’s worth every penny. She’s has explained so much to us, how he might always have a stutter and that’s ok. She’s teaching him amazing tools to slow down. She’s taught my husband and I so much. He’s was going three times a week before lockdown. And she’s kept that schedule over zoom. I think the combination of getting him out of the stressful classroom and finding him the right person has been the perfect combination. I just want to thank all of you for the support and suggestions last year.
