My understanding is that stuttering decreases or disappears whenever there is an activity that does not go directly from thought to speech. Singing is one well-known one. Another tends to be a second/third language (sometimes), while yet another is when you are using an accent or "acting" as someone else. It seems that speech, in those situations, goes "around" the regular rut we use for most of our talking.
