Stuttering can ramp up when the visual component is missing, such as on the phone or at the drive thru. This is for a couple of reasons. Because you can’t see them, you don’t have any information from facial expressions, and worry that they’re giggling, eye rolling, etc. And because they can’t see you, they might not know when you’re in a block but still talking, and therefore may interrupt you.
