You're independently catching on to one of the first things I do when I first start working with a stutterer. Stuttering is something we do and not something that happens to us. So, what do we do when we stutter? It's helpful to watch yourself talk in the mirror. If you don't stutter you can fake stutter a bit (sometimes they turn into real ones). And just watch and notice (not evaluate) what we do when we stutter. edit: as an aside, this is typically done with an SLP sitting next to the stutterer -- the SLP points out things she/he notices. It's likely going to be much easier with someone sitting next to you to watch what you do, too. Then he/she can say things like, "did you notice it when ...."
