Hi. MDMA is being studied right now as a treatment for severe anxiety disorders. Before ecstasy (MDMA) was made illegal in 1985, it was used by some therapists to treat all kinds of anxiety disorders. Then it became taboo to use therapeutically. But now a research organization called MAPS (Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies) is trying to get it FDA approved for the treatment of PTSD. Their actual goal is much wider than that and involves other psychedelics, but they are starting with that because for social/political reasons it's much easier to get money and support to treat PTSD. The early studies are extremely promising. And, as you mention in regard to what you've heard about the use of psychedelics with stuttering, when it's successful, it's not something that has to be continued or repeated; in one to three sessions, a person can be cured of severe symptoms of PTSD. However: Though I've actually done a lot of research on using MDMA on anxiety, I do not know about its efficacy with stuttering. My guess is that it may not be so straight forward with stuttering as stuttering does not appear to be result of a traumatic event, or, at least not purely the result of one. There is strong evidence that stuttering has a huge genetic and neurological cause, as most people reading this will know. But what about the severe, even crippling, anxiety that can develop in response to having a stutter? Could MDMA or another psychedelic have an effect on how we perceive our stuttering? Well....maybe. Since I did my research on MDMA (for a friend with very very severe social anxiety), I can only speak to that with some knowledge (not to lsd or to mushrooms, tho I know there is anecdotal evidence of these psychedlics helping with all kind of things): IF you're going to try it, you must make sure that you are using pure MDMA. Much ecstasy sold today has other things mixed into it, things that would ruin any possible therapeutic possibilities -- cocaine, meth, etc. You cannot expect to see if MDMA can help you therapeutically if these other drugs are mixed into it. So, you'd need a testing kit to make sure it's pure. Also, next to the purity of the drug itself, the most important thing is being in a safe environment. You need to be with what people call "sitters." These are people who have experience using ecstasy in a therapeutic setting and will "sit" with you through the whole process and be there as support to reassure you if anything troubling comes up, which it may. They are there to reassure you that any unearthed memories or reliving of past traumas happens in a safe nurturing environment. They are there to make the difference between a "bad" trip and a "good" one. Having said all this, I cannot recommend using MDMA or another psychedelic for anyone. That would be extremely irresponsible of me. I am only really intending to say that it's not a crazy idea; there is work being done to try to prove that these drugs can have a therapeutic benefit. I did a ton of research on this for my friend because he was in an absolutely dire situation and years of conventional therapy had not helped at all. He did decide to try it with an underground therapist that I found for him (after searching for many months!), but I am not familiar with the use of mushrooms, lsd, MDMA or any other psychedelic for stuttering.
