I have the slight feeling that a stutter will get worse once we get confronted by it. When a child suddenly realizes "something is wrong with me" and starts to fear being "wrong" or "weird". This then will start making the child fearful to speak and will start anticipate speaking/stuttering too much at a young age - which is a well known cause for why most of us actually stutter. Then the self-reinforcing cycle begins and a thought- and speechpattern will be engraved. Just a theory I have. Stutterer since 6 years old. Edit: typos
