I actually didn’t provide more context because I find it more helpful with statements like that , to really think about what they mean to you. He would say a lot of stuff like this and wouldn’t give me context until weeks later after I thought about it. Anyway, it’s about a couple things. One is self-esteem. You may be worried that people won’t accept you because you stutter or you’ll make a fool of yourself. Well I’m this scenario you aren’t you, you’re being someone else. And it’s likely the character you’re playing doesn’t have a stutter. Two is power. Why can you speak fluently when role playing? You obviously have the power to speak fluently. Why aren’t you doing it all the time. The therapist would say you’re letting other people have the power to make you stutter. You can’t use that power to speak fluently all the time because you’re letting others hold that power. Well in playing a role, they gave you permission to use that power. Start using that power all the time. You don’t need permission. That’s my best shot at explaining it. It sounds better in my head than what I wrote I think. Fee free to ask questions.
